Grand Trunk Depot Project

Built in 1908, the Grand Trunk Depot served as the passenger and freight depot for the former Grand Trunk Railroad. During its sixty years in service, tens of thousands of people have walked through its doors; soldiers headed to war, immigrants coming to Muskegon for the first time, and countless everyday travelers. During Muskegon's heyday as a center of industry, many of the goods produced here were loaded and unloaded at the depot. Freight cars packed here could wind up anywhere in the world. In addition to its signifcance as a center of travel and commerce, the depot is one of an increasingly smaller number of historically important buildings that remain in our community.

For over forty years, the depot has been used primarily for storage. Long overlooked, the Grand Trunk Depot stands poised for a rebirth as a center for entrepreneurism and a symbol of our community's commitment to its history and values.

Non-profit development agency Downtown Muskegon Now, along with numerous partner organizations, is undertaking the rehabilitation of the depot, taking care to preserve its architectural integrity while adapting it for contemporary uses.
