The Project Site is a piece of land on which sat a vacant single family home. The owner of the home passed away in the home. Since the gentleman’s death the property fell in to disarray and subsequently was abandoned. The property then became a danger as it turned in to a place for neighborhood kids to congregate. To that end, a fire was started in the home which gutted it. The property was purchased by a private citizen and the back taxes were paid. The home that stood on the property has been razed leaving the property overgrown. The property is now a vacant lot.
Fatty Lumpkins Sandwich Shack is located in a neighborhood setting and with the incredible success of this deli the need for additional parking is imminent. Rather than simply paving the vacant property – Fatty’s and the Watermark Development are teaming up on a plan that will not only serve as parking for Fatty’s customers, but a portion of the lot will be turned in to a beautiful, functional picnic and garden area complete with works of art by local Muskegon artists. By serving as a creative example to the entire community of a large corporation partnering with a local entrepreneur to celebrate art and beautify our neighborhood the Fat Garden Project we hope will encourage more forward thinking in the community and promote projects which draw on sustainability and accountability to community and environment as well as foster big picture ideas and examples of cooperation.
The Fat Garden will serve as a rest area to take a break from riding the Lakeshore Bike trail, relax while waiting for the Lake Express ferry or enjoy a sandwich before a day of sailing. With green space limited in the Watermark, this property now not only becomes functional but a beautiful space for the Watermark tenants to enjoy.
The garden will consist of plants native to the area that are either rescued or propagated.
The seating area
Local Artist Mat Moore currently collaborates with the Watermark development to create one of a kind furniture by repurposing and up-cycling materials. Moore developed an exclusive line of furniture for the Watermark 920. This endeavor has garnered interest from the public and kudos from the environmentally conscious and artistically inclined community. Moore will design, create and build the furniture for the seating area.
Special pieces showcasing local artists will add visual interest. Pieces submitted must be beautiful and functional. For example, a sculpture that doubles as a bike rack.
