Barb Badolati has been teaching yoga along the lakeshore for over 15 years and finally has a home in which to offer classes. This is a good thing as classes have been ever growing in demand. Besides her Wellness-Life Coaching practice in the Frauenthal Center, Barb has teamed up with Peter Violino, a certified massage therapist and yoga teacher who offers sessions at both locations.

The Muskegon Yoga Center was the brainchild of Warren Mosley, certified in yoga from the International Sivananda School. Warren, a native Muskegonite recently returned after 20 years career military and 10 years at the DOD (Department of Defense). He began taking yoga classes in the national D.C. area to relieve stress, which helped him also improve mental acuity and focus – necessary for an intense occupation there. He believes that Muskegon is ready to grow into a healthier place, both physically and mentally as it did for him.

MS: What can yoga do for people of Muskegon?

WM: In stressful times and economic uncertainties, people draw strength and comfort in the ability to control their own lives. Muskegon is experiencing a paradigm shift right now. To adjust to the changes occurring, it is important for people to be equipped to take on these challenges. Yoga provides this and much more. Some of the benefits include relaxation, concentration, flexibility, strength, a better diet, calmer mind, immune function, and relief from back, muscle and joint pain.

PV: Yoga has grown to become the most popular physical/mental activity in the United States. 29 million people participated in yoga in 2008 alone. Yoga has been helpful for myself personally to achieve better equilibrium, and I appreciate how my practice connects me to better health and well-being in other aspects of my life.

MS: What are your plans in taking Muskegon to a new level of health?

BB: The Muskegon Yoga Center, also coined as “MYCenter” not only offers a variety of classes which guide students towards a healthier body, but is also a peaceful place to rest and rejuvenate from everyday demands.

PV: We are certified teachers who are qualified to help people with just starting out or well on their way! We are planning to offer specialty programs such as Partner Yoga, YogaKids, Women’s Retreats and Healthy Lifestyle classes. All three of us offer Private Yoga session, and it is a compliment for me to provide massage therapy, which I offer at our smaller location inside the Frauenthal Center, Suite 308.

MS: What has been the progress on the Muskegon Yoga Center?

WM: Since April we have secured a lease, done renovations, and begun teaching classes in the space at 825 W. Western. Things have moved very quickly. The space is great as there is a nice reception area, a large studio space for classes, individual classrooms, shower facilities, all in an ADA accessible space. We are planning to be able to hold a wide variety of classes here geared towards different affinity groups at the Muskegon Yoga Center. For example we are already starting classes geared to cancer patients, golfers, the lunch hour crowd etc. In the past the yoga scene in Muskegon has been scattered. With the Muskegon Yoga Center we are hoping to create a central place for the community to experience the many benefits of yoga and even more than that create a powerful shift of energy in Muskegon.

MS: MS: What makes downtown Muskegon a good place for this endeavor?

PV: While there are a number of great assets, such as the YMCA, the bike trail that distinguish downtown as a healthy location. Also, many yoga centers have been successful in downtowns probably because yoga is an experience that values aesthetics and character - something plentiful in downtown cities. Finally, this central location right off of Seaway and Shoreline Drive is within 10 minutes from North Muskegon, Norton Shores and anything in between.

MS: Well, it sounds like an exciting endeavor and we wish you the best of luck in the pursuit of helping to make Muskegon a healthier and happier place.

PV, BB & WM: We are grateful to you, and everyone along the lakeshore for their interest and support.

Check it out on the web

Muskegon Yoga Center
Balance Massage and Yoga
Alive and Well
Well-BEing Tips
Yoga on Wikipedia

Over the years, many volunteer gardens have, and continue, to beautify downtown Muskegon. The Monet Garden, and the Heritage Memorial Garden, come to mind as great places to, at any given time, find downtown visitors taking a pleasant afternoon walk. This year, two new community gardens are being added to the list. As community gardens, the primary purpose of these is for participants to harvest vegetables. In many cities community gardens organized in similar ways, provide creative community assets. Muskegon Main Street caught up with Rebecca and Norman Flowers, coordinators of one of the gardens, to learn more. You can learn more about the Love Community Garden in the links section below.

MS: Where is your garden located and how did the project begin?

RNF: We are working to turn a vacant lot on Muskegon Avenue, two parcels down from the Third St Shell gas station, into a community garden. The lot is owned by Central United Methodist Church, which has graciously allowed us to use the lot. This garden has been sometime in the making, with the seeds for this year’s effort having started last year, when the late Nelson Neighborhood Improvement Association president Mike Miller began pursuing a community garden at this location. Mike passed away last year, but it is pretty special to see that the project is continuing, and eventually we are hoping to establish a memorial to Mike as part of the garden.

MS: So far this year what has been accomplished?

RNF: A lot of the work so far this year has been behind the scenes. We came to an agreement with the church to use the lot, and have spent a lot of time planning and organizing so that the garden will be beautiful and will allow for maximum community participation. Also, we have been working hand in hand with Public Health – Muskegon County, as they received a grant from the Michigan Department of Community Health to promote healthy lifestyles in our neighborhood and have selected both Nelson community gardens to spend some of their grant money on. This allowed us to construct 9 raised beds, which allow for disabled gardeners to participate.

MS: Sounds like you have been busy. What does your role as garden coordinators involve?

RNF: Basically, we are kind of like the parents of the garden. We are helping to recruit participants, we make sure they know their responsibilities, we check up on the garden regularly to make sure it is running smoothly and all gardeners are fulfilling their obligations etc. But really, it is a lot more about interacting with neighbors and having a good time.

MS: What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming community garden season?

RNF: Well, we had a successful planting last Saturday, with a great turn out, so we have a lot to look forward to over the season. Of course, we are excited about the vegetables. Personally we planted spinach, tomatoes, and bell peppers and we hope to have a nice harvest of those.

MS: Thanks for stepping forward to take on this project. The Hines Building is one of those beehives of activity as Subway has begun building out their space on the first floor, and Earthtronics is just about ready to move in on the third floor. Earthtronics, who has been in the news quite a bit recently with their Windtronics product, is poised to really impact downtown development with the build out of this beautiful space and the additional employees that will be coming on board downtown. We caught up with Reg Adams for the scoop on the new space and progress on this exciting new company.

MS: Got a date certain for the move-in to the Hines Building?

RA: We'll be all moved in hopefully by May 27th, we just got the occupancy permit this week and have started moving equipment in.

MS: I have been checking out the new suite from time to time and it is developing nicely. What are some highlights of the space?

RA: Well from our point of view the greatest thing for Earthtronics is that We will have the additional space we need for expansion. Although our friends at GVSU could not have been more accommodating with our interim home at the MAREC Center this will allow us to complete our permanent plans. And it won't just be our work place, as you walk through the office you will see a variety of lighting options, so it is like our own built in show room.

MS: The board room overlooking the Hunt sculpture is my favorite. Are you going to be renting that out:)?

RA: No, we consider it taken. But I agree it is a great space and we're planning on having Muskegon's own version of Boston Legal "End of the day" scene that will be our own special spot, just like Deny Crane and Allan Shores had at the end of every show. If you drive past and see us, make sure you honk.

MS: Any green elements to the build-out that tie into your company’s line of business?

RA: Of course, we are incorporating a variety of new technology in lighting, CFLs, dimmable's and some soon to be released LED Technology.

MS: Any developments on the business side of Earthtronics/Windtronics? I know the community is anxiously waiting on the decision regarding production of the wind turbine?

RA: Earthtronics is moving ahead, and while it has been an interesting and tough year for our retail customers, we see light ahead, no pun intended. WIndTronics has decided to also make their global head quarters Muskegon which is very exciting, but Unfortunately the first assembly plant location has not been finalized, we expect to have that decision in the next month.

MS: Well it is exciting to see an innovate company being a part of the new downtown Muskegon. Thanks for your tireless pursuit and creativity in building Earthtronics

RA: Thanks for the comments Dan. I truly appreciate all the effort that has been put forth to help these two companies feel at home here in Muskegon. I believe we have some very exciting times ahead in the energy business as aVery large door has opened a world of opportunity and we have to move now,

Check it out on the web

Earthtronics website

Behind the Scenes – Final Four Beer Tent

The Muskegon Athletic Club has been making a name for itself with sports fans since it opened last October. It hosted a successful Super Bowl party in January with fans digging the walls of HD TVs, and great sound. Now, as part of the marathon that is March Madness, the MAC is hosting a first time, and first of the season!, beer tent (gasp, its Muskegon) event that will make for a huge basketball, and now MSU, celebration. Main Street caught up with owner Andy Buck to get the scoop on this event and a few others being planned for this summer.

MS: So what’s the scoop with the Final Four Beer Tent?

AB: We thought it would be fun to come up with an annual beer tent concept and decided to go with the Final Four. Who would have guessed that the nearest team to Muskegon in the tournament would make it to the Final Four! Even with out the Spartans though, this is going to be step above your average tent because we are connecting it to the restaurant, opening our big garage doors and on top of the 5 video walls we have in the the building, we are also going to have 3, 150" big screens inside the tent. We will also have games and giveaways through out the night.

MS: Sounds like fun. Is it going rain or shine? Sun, or snow?

AB: Absolutely, it's not like they are going to postpone the games over in Detroit. And while the weather is looking okay for the moment, no matter what happens we will have full walls and heat inside the tent.

MS: I am sure the opening rounds were a lot of fun at the MAC. What was the highlight?

AB: Well, without a doubt the MSU game yesterday was the highlight. We had a great turnout of State fans and when they sealed the game, the mood was electric.

MS: I hear you have a number of outdoor summer events planned to tie into your outdoor seating space. What else is on tap?

AB: On May 15th and 16th we are having our 1st Annual Wiffle ball tourney. It's called Smack The MAC. We will have a small tent at one end of Second Street and the field will be on Second directly in front of the restaurant. We will be signing up teams of 7 and will be giving out prizes for the top 3 teams. At the end of the final game, we will have a local band play for the remainder of the night. 1/2 of the profits generated from this event will go toward the clean-up and beautification of the current empty lots along Western.

MS: More than just MAC events you been creative in creating new downtown businesses. Any other ideas in the hopper?

AB: We have 2 new projects for the downtown. One is going to be an indoor playground and coffee house and the other is another restaurant. Both are going to located on Western Avenue.

MS: Very cool. Thanks so much for the creative energy you are pouring into downtown and the energy you are creating. It really is making a difference.

AB: Thank you.

Check it out on the web

MAC Website

Behind the Scenes – Clay Avenue Cellars Expands

Clay Avenue Cellars has been experiencing dramatic growth since opening just over two years ago at 611 W. Clay Avenue. The project was a match made in heaven when Brenda Moore purchased and relocated the Freres Gas Station building from Laketon Street to Clay Ave, which made perfect sense for her partner Bob Rajewski and friend Garret Anguilm to use as an outlet to sell the fruity wines that they had been preparing to bring to market at that time. The unique building, combined with a great location near all of Muskegon Arts and Entertainment events, worked well to get the business underway, but within months, as sales and demand grew, the space was proving to be too small. Muskegon Main Street caught up with Bob to hear all the details of the expansion and other news from the Cellars.

MS: When did you know it was time to expand?

BR: After our first summer in 2006 we began filling the barrels we knew we would be able to sell for the summer of 2007. After we squeezed 22 barrels in our original room we knew there was just no way to grow anymore. From that point on we started exploring how we could create more space to support our vinting.

MS: Explain the expansion and what it adds to the winery.

BR: After some thought, it made sense for us to add a basement addition to the back of our historic building. This would provide the space and the environment needed for our wine making. The space needs to be cool and dry. So in the summer of 2008 we excavated the area needed to create 1100 square feet of space. This is allowing us to build up to the 40 barrels of wine currently in production, enough to fill 3,000 bottles of wine.

The expansion is pretty bare bones, but allowed us to install a walk in freezer where we store our local fruits till we can use them in our wines, as well as lots of space to store fermenting batches, as well as finished product. Our wines, particularly the fruits that take a lot of product to draw out the flavor (apples, pears, peaches), take hundreds of pounds of fruit to create a single batch.

MS: Very exciting. Any other news at the Cellars?

BR: As I said we have 40 barrels currently fermenting, and two of those contain flavors that we tested last year and are ready for production. Those are Golden Strawberry and Fantasy Red (Grape/Cranberry), and they will be available here at the winery in a month or two. In addition we currently have 12 test batches fermenting which won't be available to the public this year, but could be available in 2010. These include our first dry wine varieties as well as some new tastes such as citrus and elderberry. So come on down to one of our tastings and you can experience one of our new varieties.

MS: For those who have never attended a wine tasting, what can they expect?

BR: Our tastings are pretty fun and relaxed. We just have all of our varieties available for tasting and patrons can taste them all before making a decision on a wine they might like to take home. Our tasting room is cozy and our tastings are popular so be prepared for standing room only and a good time. Our next tasting is this Saturday, March 14, but if you can't make it then we have tastings every second Saturday of the month.

MS: Of course everyone is looking forward to spring and summer. Any special events/promotions planned for the “happy” season?

BR: We join in that sentiment of looking forward to summer. We are licensed to serve on our deck and of course can’t wait for weather when we can move our tastings outdoors. This summer we are planning to participate in the Taste Garden at the Taste of Muskegon again, as well as hold tastings during downtown Muskegon's other big summer events including Summer Celebration, the Art Fair, Bike Time etc.

MS: Well it's very exciting to your business prospering downtown Muskegon and to see the creativity with which you approach your craft. All the best in the future

BR: Thank you.

Check it out on the web

Clay Avenue Cellars website
More Clay Avenue Cellars Pics

Behind the Scenes – Family Foods Expands Grocery Offerings

While you might have not notice major changes driving by the Muskegon Family Foods location at 1157 Third St, for those who have ventured in recently the changes would be impossible to miss. The most exciting part for downtown residents and patrons is the expansion of grocery products offered, to include fresh meats, vegetables and fruits. Muskegon Main Street visited Chris Kado at his store and caught up on the changes.

MS: Very nice improvements Chris. What exactly did you undertake?

CK: We closed the store for over a week in the fall and remodeled from top to bottom. We put in new flooring, new expanded shelves, new coolers, a meat counter, a veggie cooler, a new public restroom, upgraded surveillance systems, a new bottle return machine, and opened a week later with expanded hours each day from 10:00 a.m. till 10:00 p.m. Our goal was to improve the experience for our customers with a brighter, cleaner environment along with improved convenience.

MS: What has the reaction been?

CK: Our customers love it. Many of our customers are from the near downtown neighborhoods and they have been unanimous in agreeing that is brighter, cleaner and more convenient. For example I just spoke with Ms. Johnson from Muskegon Avenue who has been a customer for 10 years and she told me that she now feels safer and this is the only place she now needs to shop at during the week.

MS: I especially like the meat and veggie expansion. Can you tell us more about that?

CK: Sure, we found that a lot of customers were having to travel a number of miles to a supermarket each week for these products so we studied the issue some and thought that it would be a win-win to add a counter for each of these items. We receive fresh shipments every week, and we have a butcher manning the meat counter every day. Beyond the produce and meat offerings, we recently were accredited for the WIC program, which meant we had to beef up our other grocery offerings as well, so we have more foods and staples in stock.

MS: Now that you have finished up this expansion, are you looking at any other improvements?

CK: We are currently studying the feasibility of delivering groceries to the homes of nearby senior citizens. We have a number of issues to work out including processing orders, payments etc, as well as program details, but we know there are a lot of seniors who live in our neighborhood who might find this service useful.

MS: Well thanks for your time, and congratulations on your expansion and the improvements. Those who have seen them certainly are impressed.

CK: You're welcome.

Check it out on the web

Muskegon Family Foods Business Directory listing

Behind the Scenes – Dreamers Blues Series

It's the time of year to enjoy indoor activities downtown Muskegon, except if you relish the opportunity to play outdoor volleyball at SnowFest. And as is pretty much always the case, there are lots of options to make it easy to come on in and be cosy. Muskegon Lumberjacks, Alley Door Club, WSSO, Postcard salon at MMA, or a meal and drink at downtown restaurants, will all warm you up. This year there is a new event on the calendar; the Blues Series at Dreamers, located at 978 Pine. Ann Mahan-McAllister and partner Malachi Williams have high standards for their bi-monthly series, so its sure to not disapoint. The goal is to offer music that you couldn't otherwise hear without travelling to Chicago. Muskegon Main Street caught up with Mr. Williams to hear how the series has been going and what is on tap for the next few weeks.

MS: Great idea to create this series here in Muskegon. How has it been going?

MW: Well, we started the series in the middle of September and the series has been going extremely well. This series is unabashedly about the blues and we are starting to build up that reputation. New customers have been coming from further and further away as they hear about the experience we are offering. We like to say that the Blues Series only promotes the kind of blues that make you sit down and think about how bad you need a bailout!

MS: Who has been the biggest crowd pleaser to date and were there any notable highlights of that show?

MW: Linsey Alexander, the original performer and inspiration for the Blues Series, played a date early in the season in September and it was an amazing show. The crowd was loving it, but the real highlight of the night was when the renowned Little Freddie King made a surprise appearance, arriving at around 1:00 a.m. and played till close with Linsey. It was just a fantastic experience and was even mentioned in the Dec/Jan issue of Big City Blues, a national blues publication. What a night!

MS: How do you go about choosing the artists?

MW: Well, like I said we have tough standards and are really looking for Chicago Blues. We aim to bring artists that are of the caliber, or have already played at the Kingston Mines Club in Chicago. Mostly we book them through contacts with artists that have played the series. Artists seem to like stopping in Muskegon and like the atmosphere we provide here at Dreamers.

MS: Who is coming up at Dreamers?

MW: Our next shows are this weekend, Feb 6 and 7 when Mathew Skoller comes to town. Matthew is a world famous harmonica player hailing from the Windy City. He is a veteran musician who is at the forefront of a new generation who have come up schooled in Chicago's world-renowned and highly competitive blues scene. Another highlight a little down the road is T. Bird Huck. This a return performance for T. Bird and he tore it up the last time he was in town.

MS: Any other details the public should be aware of?

MW: Not really. Just that you should come out the first, or third weekend of the month. Cover is $10, but noone has ever felt it hasn’t been worth it. We are working on adding local bands on the second and fourth weekends of the month, but we’ll be sure to distinguish that from our Chicago Blues Series.

MS: Very cool. Thanks for taking the time and for your efforts to bring this great addition to Muskegon.

MW: Thank you.

Check it out on the web

Dreamers on MySpace
Listen to upcoming Artist Matthew Skoller
Matthew Skoller on YouTube
Muskegon Chronicle article on Blues Series

Mia & Grace Cookin' it up on WZZM

Jamie and Jeremy Paquin of Mia & Grace show off their skills on WZZM.

Full Story and Video

Behind the Scenes – Baker Culinary Institute – The Heat is On!

When Baker College broke ground this past July on the Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM) they knew it would be a race with the weather to get the building buttoned up for winter, allowing for interior construction to continue through the winter. Well the snow came early, but fortunately the contractors were on the ball and the building has been sealed to the elements and the heat is on in the building, making for an efficient working environment moving forward. Patrick Kopytek, Director of Facilities and CIM Project Manager for Baker College, gave Main Street a tour of the quickly evolving project and answered a few questions about the progress.

MS: Very exciting to see the progress. I think to this point most people have been able to witness the changes due to the exterior construction but that might be a little harder now. What are some of the next steps of the construction?

PK: Almost all the interior walls are studded out. The next major jobs include finishing up the heating and cooling systems and completing drywall installation. Then all the floors need to be finished and finally the drop ceilings will be installed. This is all on schedule to be wrapped up the end of May.

MS: What are some of the reactions of folks you show the building to, now that they see the plans becoming a reality?

PK: Visitors love the layout of the restaurant, which will be called Courses, and think the adjoining outdoor seating is going to be great. Also the feeling of grandness that the atrium, and rounded staircase conveys has been mentioned numerous times. Otherwise, the views of Hackley Park, and the Hunt sculpture from the third floor have made a big impression. Finally just the space and number of cooking stations that the students will have access to make pretty much every visitor envious!

MS: When does Baker plan to take control of the facility and start getting the culinary school equipment moved in?

PK: Stafford Smith has all the cooking equipment ordered and they will be ready to be moved in after the basic interior finishes are completed at the end of March. We are talking about a lot equipment including ovens, hoods, student stations, coolers, and the display cooking stations so it will take some time to install it all.

MS: What room will have the largest amount of cooking equipment, and what kind of equipment will it be?

PK: Probably the combined restaurant kitchen, charcuterie, and bakery will have the most intense concentration of equipment. In this dynamic space the entire menu will be able to be cooked, served and cleaned, all adjoining, but not noticed by, the Courses patrons.

MS: Congratulations on the appointment of Mary Ann Herbst as President of the Muskegon campus. In a related note has there been any progress on a new Dean for the Culinary school, and when would you expect a new dean to be on board?

PK: Five candidates from outside Baker College had initial interviews and second interviews and those interviews are proceeding. The new dean, who will lead the CIM to its grand opening and beyond, will be announced soon.

MS: Very exciting. Looks like everything is on track and the future of the culinary program at Baker is quite bright. Thanks for your time.

PK: Your welcome and we can't wait to celebrate with the community at the grand opening.

Check it out on the web

Culinary Institute of Michigan
on the web

Culinary
Institute of Michigan construction cam

Culinary Institute Intro
Video

Behind the Scenes – Promenade Progress

It’s all covered with snow now, but next year the Third Street Promenade, along Third St between Clay and Morris, will continue its metamorphosis into some great public space alongside three recently/to be soon completed buildings right in the vicinity of the round-a-bout. Upon completion the promenade will feature stages, benches, fountains, and interactive art, that will complement the arts, entertainment and retail activities taking place downtown Muskegon. The Community Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce are spearheading a private fundraising effort to help with initial site development costs. Bob Chapla, Vice President of Development at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, sat down to talk about the initiative and how you can partner in it.

MS: What has been going on in terms of physical development of the Third Street Promenade?

BC: Work has wrapped up on the piece of the Third Street Promenade that is directly next to the new Hines Building. A rain garden, a small stage, benches, a trash receptacle and the continuation of the decorative concrete pattern throughout downtown have been completed. Still in progress is work on the initial piece of the Promenade between Western and Clay in front of the new Sidock building..

MS: The improvements are being funding through fundraising done in part by the Community Foundation. What is the fundraising strategy?

BC: There are many opportunities for people to join us in building Muskegon’s newest public space and at many different levels. There are a number of specific “naming opportunities” that include the Promenade itself, plazas, stages, a fountain, kiosks, art partner, and a rain garden. We have created many different levels of support with the thought that this will provide an opportunity for all of us to participate in building this space. We have received a significant lead gift from Mike and Kay Olthoff. As long standing Muskegon supporters the Olthoff’s have made another commitment to seeing that the new downtown includes places for all to gather.

MS: I have seen some ads in the Chronicle about the project?

BC: We started running ads last week and will continue running them through the end of the year offering the opportunity for anyone to become a paver, bench or planter partner. For $250 you can purchase a paver (brick) and for a $1,000 either a bench or planter. When purchasing any one of these you can then have your name inscribed, or the name of a loved one, or your family or kids, or whomever you want to be remembered. Maybe instead of trying to find just the right gift for an impossible person on your holiday list, we hope that people will see the purchase of one of these items as a great alternative. The best part is that it is easy … just cut out ad … and mail or fax it back to us … you don’t even have to go out into the snow. This is a great way for your name to be permanently connected with the rebirth of a downtown Muskegon.

MS: What’s the goal from here?

BC: We plan to have the money raised prior to the start of construction of the remainder of the promenade next spring. The goal for completion of the promenade itself is next fall, just prior to the grand opening of the Culinary Institute of Michigan. A lot of people have been waiting for their chance to get involved and we think these naming opportunities offer many different levels for people to get connected

MS: Very exciting. Well I know you will be busy in spite of the lack of action on the actual site over the winter. Best of luck in this exciting endeavor to involve the community in the rebuilding of downtown Muskegon.

BC: Thanks.

Check it out on the web

Third Street Promenade on the web

Muskegon Chronicle Promenade ad

Downtown Photo-Op - Mia & Grace in Lake Magazine

Visit the Lake Magazine website to check out their plug of Mia and Grace.

While almost everyone knows The Cheese Lady and probably has had an opportunity to taste her product, she has never truly held a grand opening. With the purchase and renovation of 808 Terrace into a permanent home, she agreed it was time, and this weekend she is celebrating her grand opening in style. This makes for a great opportunity to check out her new, spacious digs, along with a raftful of new products, during this event-filled weekend. We caught up with Kathleen Riegler, the Cheese Lady, to get the scoop.

MS: What’s going on with the grand opening celebration?

KR aka TCL: We’re hosting a three day extravaganza of sampling, special pricing and door prizes at the Terrace Street Location. Check out our demonstration schedule on my website at www.thecheeselady.net.

MS: You’ve been open at the new location for a few months now. What’s the best part about it?

KR aka TCL: The best part is the BREATHING room. We look around and can see everything and everybody.

MS: You did a lot of improvements to the building; which really stand out? What was all involved?

KR aka TCL: In the beginning, we thought we would just clean up the front of the building and throw a little paint on the walls. But, as with most "best laid" plans, that isn't what happened. When the front facade was removed, we found the original brick, which I loved. So we moved on to a renovation project. And our experience with stripping floors at 197 Clay taught us that life is just too short to tackle another floor so we opted for a slate laminate to warm up the space. We love the way it turned out, warm and welcoming.

MS: You also own the retail suite in the same building. Any plans for it?

TKR aka TCL: Gail Smythe has leased the space and is in the process of moving her Earthly Kneads bakery into the space. We are excited to have her going in next to us. For more information www.earthlykneads.com

MS: Your grand opening is part of a larger downtown retail event taking place. What is that about?

KR aka TCL: WRAP IT UP is the holiday kick-off for some small business owners in Downtown and Lakeside that call themselves Synergy. We have banded together to support each other and do some promotional advertising. Friday and Saturday these small business owners will be extending their hours, running specials and giving away door prizes. I have the list at the store, so stop by and get one.

MS: Well, I must say, you have been a tireless proponent and believer of downtown Muskegon retail, for some years now. All the common area space is renovated, including hallways, elevator, restrooms, and very nice common break room with a skylight. There is about 8000 sq ft of potential office space that can be broken up to whatever size is needed, much of it overlooking Muskegon Lake and the Third and Western round-a-bout.

Downtown Website - Check out Watermark Center site

Watermark Studios and Lofts recently launched a new website which shows of how the Watermark Studio is being incorporated into their Water View Condo project. .

Link to Watermark Website

Behind the Scenes – Lumberjacks Make a Comeback

Hockey is part of the Muskegon psyche. Over the last fifty years, Muskegon, and the Walker Arena have been home to many championship hockey teams, both with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, and more recently with the Muskegon Fury. After 16 years of Fury Frenzy, Muskegon is about to experience a blast from the past with this year’s pro team, the comeback Muskegon Lumberjacks. The change back to the Lumberjack identity was initiated by new owners Stacey Patulski, Jeff Patulski, and Tim Taylor. All three see the move as a way to re-kindle excitement with a focus on Muskegon’s rich hockey tradition. Muskegon Main Street caught up with Stacey, also an owner of the local Sport Clips franchise, to hear about the plans for the upcoming season.

MS: How is the community reacting to the return to the Lumberjack name?

SP: I've received more compliments about the return of the Lumberjack name than expected. It seems the loyal connection with the Lumberjack name is due to it's reference to the Muskegon area’s heritage. Of course the younger generation of hockey fans have only known the Fury, and some of them are a little saddened.

MS: The season starts this week. Is the team ready to rock n’ roll?

SP: Tim Taylor, General Manager and Bruce Ramsey, Coach have assembled an impressive roster. They've been using all their connections to attract some highly talented additions to our returning foundation. Teams will not be excited to visit the LC Walker Arena this year as this is going to be physically tough hockey team.

MS: We hear there will be a Street Party to usher in the new season prior to Saturday’s opener. What’s on tap?

SP: Yes, there will be a Street Party with activities running from 2pm to 7pm. There will be FREE kids games and activities, sponsor givaways, vendor foods, beer tent, DJ, Live Radio Remotes and Street Performers. The Lumberjack staff will continue adding to this list through-out the week.

MS: What other exciting twists are the Lumberjacks planning for the upcoming season?

SP: This Lumberjacks organization is committed to our fans and sponsors this season. We'll roll out some new exciting fan experience opportunities, special guest appearances and game night activities as the season gets underway.

MS: Any prediction on how many games the team will win? Thinking championship at all?

SP: Our focus is to bring the Turner Cup back to Muskegon in 2009.

MS: Over the years hockey has been an important economic activity downtown Muskegon. Fans have supported our community arena, along with downtown restaurants and shops, and we are grateful for your investment in Muskegon hockey, which will allow that tradition to continue. Best of luck, and we hope the team gets off to a winning start Saturday.

SP: This is the community’s team and we look forward to providing them the quality fan experiences they deserve, on and off the ice. This organization is here for the fans and their feedback is always welcome.

Check it out on the web

Muskegon Lumberjacks website
Become a Fan on Facebook

Behind the Scenes – MAC close to opening

A great Arts & Entertainment District needs outstanding nightlife, and while City Café, Tipsy Toad, Racquets, Mikes Inn, and the Harbor Steakhouse provide a variety of places for fun, another destination will soon be added to the mix. The Muskegon Athletic Club is the brainchild of Andy Buck, a White Lake native who couldn’t get enough of the great nightlife in Southeast Michigan, while an architecture student. As no one was stepping up to fill the void, Andy did and his vision will become a reality in any day when the Muskegon Athletic Club will open in the old National City Bank building that was part of the former Muskegon Mall. While not quite sugarplums and fairies, Andy has put a log of imagination into the project and it will be sure to impress. Main Street caught up with Andy to get the scoop.

MS: What is the Muskegon Athletic Club?

AB: The MAC is a downtown style sports restaurant and bar that includes outdoor sidewalk seating, retractable doors that allow the outside in, 5 video walls, 2 Wii stations to be played on 150" screens and a semi private area for business luncheons with an easy access point for Power Point presentations.

MS: Who do you see this venue appealing to?

JR: I designed it with hopes that it would appeal to almost everyone. Even if you don't like watching sports, we still offer a fun menu (see our website) as well as a nice facility.

MS: How did you match the building to your vision for the MAC?

AB: The bank building has a raw, industrial feel and so I incorporated that same feeling on the inside with a splash of color.

MS: Any special food, or drink items that will be unique to the MAC?

AB: Our signature food is MAC n' cheese. We will always have 6 different MAC's as well as a MAC of the Month.

MS: How do you think the MAC fits in/adds to the revitalization taking place downtown Muskegon?

AB:I hope that what we are bringing to the downtown is close to what our city has been hoping for. My educational background is in architecture and urban design. I've been lucky enough to study and visit some cities that have been successful in the revitalization process. Through these experiences and talking with downtown planners, I did my best to incorporate the things that have worked in other cities with what the planners believed downtown Muskegon needed.

MS: Well as a sports fan and a technology lover I am guessing you’ll be able to find me there often. Thanks for stepping out there and making your vision a reality. It’s one thing to have ideas about what would be a hit, it is quite another to actually give it a go. Downtown living was identified as the key component by Imagine Muskegon to spurring mixed use revitalization downtown. Among the current projects, one stands tall, eight stories tall, in fact. HighPoint Flats is the redevelopment of one of downtown Muskegon’s great buildings, the Hackley Bank building, and is being developed by Jon Rooks of Parkland Properties. Jon’s vision for HighPoint Flats, along with his proven track record of turning a vision into a downtown living reality make this an exciting project for downtown Muskegon and last week the City of Muskegon Planning Commission agreed and gave the project site plan approval. Main Street caught up with Jon to check in on the project’s progress.

MS: What is the vision for the HighPoint Flats project?

JR: Our vision for HighPoint Flats is to bring affordable urban lofts to the growing downtown area. These urban lofts will boast big city living with their ceiling to floor window walls, generous balconies and roof top decks, hip and custom design features, and common areas like a lounge, fitness center, movie room, and roof top deck. Our buyers are very excited about the downtown growth, Tax Free living, and great lake views from the large windows, balconies, and roof top decks. The 70 condos at HighPoint Flats is expected to bring in over 100 new downtown owners. The extra disposable income being spent will further support the downtown area. If each resident spends $5,000 downtown per year it would bring in an additional $500,000 to the city each year. This spending also helps to grow a stable platform for local businesses and shops to thrive.

MS: After completing due diligence and finalizing entitlements for the project you started marketing in earnest around the time of Summer Cel. It has been, and will continue to be a busy summer downtown. How’s the marketing going?

JR: Marketing is going great and we currently have 27 reservations for the 70 condos. HighPoint Flats offers complete customization, fun amenities, no city income taxes, no state income taxes, and no property taxes until 2023, so the building sells itself. We just launched our website at www.highpointflats.com which includes information on the building, the area, floor plans, reasons to buy, news, FAQ, pictures, virtual tours, and contact information. We also have a nice flyer, which are in pick up boxes outside the building. You can call Brad Veneklase at 616-988-6466 for more information or to reserve a condo today.

MS: Any guess at a time frame for rehab of the building commencing?

JR: We hope to start interior demolition and expansion of the window openings late this winter. Some windows will be the size of a two-car garage door. Once we begin, we expect the construction and occupancy to take 10-14 months depending on our buyers customization needs. The entire project will be done in one phase and the commercial street fronts and residential will all come together at once.

MS: I know there are some incentives for those choosing a condo at HighPoint. Can you summarize those?

JR: Since the property is located in a state designated Renaissance Zone, you’ll be exempt from all state income tax, all city income tax, and nearly all property taxes. And since HighPoint Flats has been granted the longest Renaissance Zone available, you’ll enjoy living tax-free till 2023! Lets take an example: Mike & Melanie are married and a combined annual income of $95,000. If they bought a 2-bedroom condo with a balcony for $150,000, their mortgage expense with a 6.5% interest rate and 10% down would be $853 per month. Association dues would be around $230 per month. They would pay $0 property taxes. Their federal tax deduction for owning would be -$204. Their city and state income tax savings would be -$423 per month. This gives them a total monthly cost of ownership of $456. This is quite the deal for anyone! Not to mention, with the growth downtown is experiencing, appreciation could create a pretty nice profit as well.

MS: I understand owners may have an option for Muskegon Lake access. Is that the case?

JR: We are hoping to have nearby boat slips for sale for our HighPoint Flat buyers. We are big fans of amenities and waterways and enjoy watching our buyers enjoy their surroundings. This is why we like our location so much. And of course, it’s more than Muskegon Lake access; it includes access to Lake Michigan and all of the ports connected to Lake Michigan.

MS: The sense of place available in this project really stands out. In order to get a better taste of the project I definitely recommend visiting the High Point Flats website, which in addition to describing the experience available for High Point Flats potential owners, does a fantastic job of showcasing the greater downtown Muskegon area. Thanks for your investment in downtown, your work through this point on HighPoint, and the best of luck on the project.

JR: Thanks. We are very excited to be a part of downtown Muskegon’s revival. Please give our website, www.highpointflats.com, and Brad Veneklase’s phone number, (616) 988-6466, to anyone who is interested in purchasing, or simply just curious.

Thanks to Brandon Bartoszek for the use of the HighPoint Sign Photo above. Some are long expected, like the re-opening of Carmens J, and some seem to come out of nowhere. That was the case with Dave and Kristine Olsen who went from 0-40 with the opening of Grips 'n' Gears, a Whizzer outlet, almost as fast as one of the new Whizzer Ambassadors can make it to the same speed! Whizzers are unique throwback motorbikes that were extremely popular in the 20 years following WWII. A sense of nostalgia and the fact that some of the bike models get 120 miles to the gallon have led to a resurgence of the brand which the Olsen’s are capitalizing on. Main Street caught up with Kristine who informed us of how things have been developing since their opening was announced prior to Muskegon Bike Time.

MS: So what did you think of your first Muskegon Bike Time?

KO: It was exciting! We loved riding our Whizzers among them. Kinda felt like one of the big guys. We loved all their fabulous bikes. They seemed to like ours too.

MS: I hear you are planning to stay here at 942 Terrace Street, rather than moving to W. Clay. What led to the change of heart?

KO: Situations beyond our control, but we need to settle in. We can't keep moving about and the neighbors, here, are very nice. We'll be painting our sign and putting down our roots soon.

MS: Looks like the showroom is filling up with Whizzer bikes, T-shirts and other paraphernalia? What else is on the horizon for addition to the inventory?

KO: Peterboro bike baskets will be coming in this week. They're handmade in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire and have been a family-owned and operated business in New England for 153 years. We will be getting bicycles and other accessories soon too, and even some Amish baskets.

MS: How did you come to be connected with these nostalgic machines?

KO: The Whizzers are great! Moderately priced and fun to ride! We kinda stumbled across a Whizzer and then followed up, trying to learn more. The next thing we knew, we had the dealership for West Michigan. It has been a learning experience ever since.

MS: When you are riding around town what are people’s reactions to the bikes?

KO: They stop and stare, smile, and give us a nod or a thumbs up, and sometimes holler "Hey, nice bike".

MS: Downtown Muskegon sure is becoming the place to find cool stuff. Welcome and best of luck!

KO: Thank you. The people we have met here in Muskegon have been very welcoming. I think we will enjoy being here.

Comment on this story on the Downtown Muskegon Blog

Grips 'n' Gears website
Whizzer Motorbikes Company website
YouTube video of a Whizzer in Action
Info for Restoration Enthusiasts

Behind the Scenes - Mia & Grace

Good food takes time, and likewise the opening of Mia & Grace was two years in the making.. But it’s always worth the wait. Jeremy and Jamie Paquin have updated a long ago Muskegon hangout, Big Bob’s (1133 Third St), into a third place for today’s hipsters with bold colors, historic character, local art, a living room feel, and above all great local food. Main Street caught up with Jamie to get all the details on this new, must hit, Muskegon destination.

MS: Obviously you and Jeremy have a passion for great food. Where did that love come from and how have both of you developed your skills to this degree?

JP: We both have culinary degrees but in the chef world, that is really just a formality. Jeremy started cooking at his grandmother's restaurant when he was 13 and has been a cook ever since. I grew up in a traditional Italian family where the little girls helped out in the kitchen. I guess we just inherited our passion. Since we've been together our cooking styles have melded into this cohesive effort that just works. We love working together to get just the right flavor combination or to tweak a recipe until we're both satisfied. Everything in cooking, just like life, is a learning experience.

MS: What is your vision for the bakery and restaurant items you serve here at Mia & Grace?

JP: It's simple. We want to use the best ingredients available to create the best food we know how. Buying produce and meat from local farmers is the only way to ensure the quality meets our standard. In a time where it's pretty easy to place an internet order for food to be delivered to the back door, we still choose to go out to the farms and meet the people that are growing the produce and raising the animals. We've made some really great friends and can take comfort in knowing that your grass-fed burger is actually grass-fed only 30 minutes up the highway.

MS: What is the inspiration for the name Mia & Grace?

JP: Mia is our 2-year-old daughter. She's our inspiration for everything so it seemed very fitting to name our business for her. Grace has multiple meanings. Jeremy's sister is Grace. Jeremy is one of 7 kids, but she and Jeremy have always had a special relationship. Grace was named for her paternal grandmother. So it's nice that Grandma Grace can be remembered too. Our lives revolve around our family, as does our business.

MS: This building, with its 5 second floor apartments, needed some love when you crossed paths two years ago.I must say you did a masterful job transforming the ghost of Big Bob’s into a trendy third place. What were some of the major renovation items you hit?

JP: Let's see...each apartment (there are 4 now) was a top to bottom renovation. We salvaged as much as we could along the way including 100-year-old doors, trim, and hardwood floors. Unfortunately some things just had to be replaced. From there we moved outside to the façade. We replaced the roof and boiler. Inside Mia & Grace, we removed everything down to the studs and sub floor and build it right back up. We have had some very talented people help us out along the way.

MS: In addition to tasteful rehabilitation, you really nailed the finishing touches that make the place sing. Describe those.

JP: The hand-nailed wood floors were a ton of work but they immediately made the space feel comfortable. We have great local art displayed throughout that ranges from serene landscapes to wild abstracts - all original, just like our food. The menu is written on butcher paper clipped on a line at the back of the shop. This makes it easy for us to change with product availability. Our breakfast pastries and sweet treats are displayed in the case and on the counter so that while you're eating, you can be deciding what you want for dessert! Crisp, white linens under the butcher paper creates a casual, yet refined, look -- again a reflection of us and our food.

MS: Tell us a little more about how the local art scheme works.

JP: All of the art on our walls is for sale. We call it the Artists Share. Mia & Grace does not take a commission from the sale, instead, we donate a portion of the profit to a local charity. All of the artists have agreed to donate a minimum of 10%, some have asked to give more. We sold the first piece on opening day!!

MS: Well having been here twice for lunch already, I can say “Two Thumbs Up”. All the dishes I have tried have been exquisite, and I can’t wait to try them all. You’ve created a special place here. Thanks so much for taking time to share.

JP: Anytime! We're glad to do it.

Comment on this story on the Downtown Muskegon Blog

Check it out on the web

Mia & Grace Website
Local Food Movement on Wikipedia
