Silversides Monday Lecture: The Corpsman’s Experience in Vietnam – POSTPONED

March 16, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Monday, March 16 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm, the USS Silversides is thrilled to welcome guest lecturers Michael Kuklenski and Steve Vineyard to speak on “The Corpsman’s Experience in Vietnam” as part of the museum’s 10 part lecture series on the Vietnam Conflict.  The cost to attend is $5.00 per person or FREE with your USS Silversides Submarine Museum membership.   For more information call (231) 755-1230.

During the Vietnam War, Michael Kuklenski was assigned to a group of Marines.  A deeply religious man, Kuklenski served as a conscientious objector, refusing to carry a gun with him into combat zones.  On May 29, 1969, his group was attacked.  Despite being wounded on three separate occasions, Kuklenski continued to treat his wounded Marines and did not stop helping until all of the wounded men had been moved to safety.  For his heroic actions that night, Kuklenski was awarded the Silver Star.

Steve Vineyard, a lifelong friend of Kuklenski’s was assigned to a Marine Reconnaissance Unit.  He performed minor surgeries frequently while in the country, working hard to assist men so they did not have to visit battalion aid stations.  Steve Vineyard earned a Purple Heart while working to save lives in Vietnam.
